Former President Trump Greeted by Japan's Emperor Naruhito Before Encountering Recently Elected PM

Ex-President Donald Trump received a royal reception on Monday in Japan, the next stop of a week-long Asian journey which he hopes to cap with an arrangement on a commercial dispute resolution with Beijing's head of state Xi Jinping.

Diplomatic Engagements

Trump, undertaking his most extensive foreign travel since taking office in January, revealed deals with multiple Asian nations during the opening phase in Malaysia and is expected to have talks with Xi in South Korea on Thursday.

The former leader exchanged greetings with dignitaries on the airport runway and offered a few fist pumps, before his aircraft whisked him off for a nocturnal sightseeing trip of Tokyo. His motorcade was subsequently observed accessing the emperor's residence, where he met Japanese emperor Naruhito.

Economic Agreements

The former president has obtained a $550-billion investment pledge from Japan in return for a break from punishing import tariffs.

The country's recently appointed leader, Sanae Takaichi, is hoping to further impress Trump with commitments to buy US utility vehicles, agricultural products and gas, and reveal an agreement on vessel manufacturing.

Japan's leader, who was appointed as Japan's first female premier recently, told Trump that bolstering their countries' alliance was her "top priority" in a telephone call on the weekend.
