Larry Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is exiting the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a series of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.
The economist remarked in a statement that he was "appreciative for the chance to have contributed, excited about the potential of the organization, and anticipate observing their development".
Summers, who previously headed Harvard University, stated on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his relationship with Epstein.
Email Communications
The freshly disclosed emails showed that Summers exchanged messages with Epstein until the day before his 2019 arrest for suspected trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company expressed it accepted his choice to step down.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the insight he provided to the directors," the organization commented.
Legislative Background
This development comes after the entire Congress of the legislative branch decided on Tuesday to pass a measure that would mandate the US justice department to make public its records on Epstein.
The measure will afterward proceed to the administration of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. He has said he expects to endorse the bill, after modifying his stance on the subject following pushback from his followers.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-related messages released by the House Oversight Committee recently included multiple well-known personalities in the billionaire's previous network, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those figures.
The emails showed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often attempting to connect the official to prominent international personalities.
Personal Accountability
After the emails were released with the general audience, he said he assumed "complete accountability for my ill-advised choice to persist in corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to rebuild trust and fix bonds with the people closest to me".
Professional History
Summers held high-level positions under party leaders; functioning as economic leader under President Clinton, and as leader of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He presided over Harvard from five years and continues to be a professor there. When declaring his departure from public commitments recently on Monday, he stated he would continue his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following his announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a progressive research organization in the capital where Summers was a researcher, verified that the economist was not connected with the organization.
Summers became part of the leadership of the AI company, which creates the language model, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its top executive OpenAI's head.
