Major Web Outage Affects Dozens Sites and Applications

A widespread internet failure has disrupted many online platforms and apps worldwide, as users experiencing problems accessing the internet following issues at Amazon’s cloud computing platform.

The impacted platforms comprise Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, along with several Amazon-operated operations like its primary shopping website and the Ring security home security firm.

In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was disrupted along with its subsidiaries the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, with also reports of problems using the HM Revenue and Customs site on that morning. Furthermore across the UK, multiple Ring users turned to networks to state their home gadgets were not working.

Solely in the United Kingdom, accounts of problems on specific apps reached the tens of thousands for each platform.

The company stated that the issue originated in the Atlantic coast of the US at the cloud division, a section that provides vital internet framework for numerous companies, who utilize space on Amazon servers. AWS is the biggest global online services service.

Shortly after midnight (PDT) in the US (8am BST), Amazon confirmed “increased error rates and latencies” for Amazon's platforms in a region on the east coast of the America. The ripple effect appeared to hit apps worldwide, and the outage tracking website indicating problems with the corresponding services in multiple continents.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a tool that tracks internet outages, further indicated a surge in outages on the start of the week, and numerous instances located in Virginia, the site of the eastern US data center where AWS said the issues started.
