South American Rugby Union Triumphs Drive Men's World Cup Qualifying Campaign
As numerous fans in the UK concentrate on club season-opening performances or discuss forthcoming fall test matches, the battle for 2027 Rugby World Cup qualifying continues unabated.
Chile's Historic Achievement
Chile earned their back-to-back spot at the tournament with a sensational playoff victory against Samoa last month, leaving one place left to be claimed for Australia by 2027. Meanwhile, Paraguay surprised Brazil by twenty points in the opening match of their playoff.
The second leg takes place this Saturday in the Brazilian city, near São Paulo, as Brazil's men's team aims to follow their women's achievement and secure qualification for the first occasion.
Forthcoming Qualification Showdown
Whether Paraguay manages a surprise aggregate win, or Brazil bounces back after head coach Emiliano Caffera's recent dismissal, the lineup for next month's qualifying event in Dubai will then be finalized. Namibia, the Belgian squad, and the Samoan side have already secured spots for the Dubai-based competition from 8-18 November.
Worldwide Qualification Updates
Many other nations have also earned their spots. The Hong Kong China team achieved first-time World Cup entry after beating Korea by a large margin in July, and the Zimbabwean squad will make a comeback to rugby union's premier tournament for the first time since 1991 by virtue of claiming victory in the Rugby Africa Cup.
Chile's Growing Reputation
The consequence of Chile's playoff success ensures that Los Condores will face Italy for the first occasion in November during the fall test series, taking the place of Samoa who must compete in the Dubai tournament.
World Rugby's CEO called Chile an "exciting and rapidly rising power" in confirming the upcoming fixture in Genoa. While local the sport promotional efforts aim for larger crowds, rugby in Chile is thriving. A sell-out audience of over 20,000 saw the qualifying win in Viña del Mar, and head coach the national coach has led the team on an improving path since taking over in recent years.
Coach's Impressive Legacy
The fifty-year-old ex- Uruguayan forward has been influencing the game for many years: signed by Bristol in the late 90s, he memorably broke through England defense to score at the 2003 global tournament.
His influence as national coach has been similarly powerful: Chile have risen to seventeenth place, their best position. During the previous tournament in Europe, they were defeated in all matches, allowing 215 points and scoring twenty-seven, including a heavy defeat against the English team.
However, they confidently took the positive aspects, and following the tournament draw in Sydney on December 3rd, the coach can begin planning in earnest. They hosted the Scottish team previously, defeated 52-11 in front of 24,000 supporters, and although they were beaten over two legs by the Uruguayan side in the initial qualifying round, they managed a narrow win on the road in Montevideo.
The Samoan Qualification Challenge
Samoa, in contrast, have not missed all Rugby World Cup for decades, but are currently sitting in sixteenth position in the men's rankings. They were winless in this year's Pacific Nations Cup, leading to playoff misery against Chile, and the need to face teams like Belgium brings additional challenge for the proud rugby nation.
Tournament Format Changes
Apart from specific teams' fortunes, it is worth noting how changed the expanded tournament will appear in 2027. For the first occasion, there will be a round of 16 with six pools of four teams instead of four groups of five. Group phase jeopardy is significantly reduced because the four best third-placed teams will also qualify.
Hosts and Rankings Consequences
The hosts, Australia, are now placed seventh in the global rankings, which means they would fall short on a top seed and might face either South Africa, New Zealand, the Irish, France, the English, or the Pumas in their group. They may rise into the highest seeds during a busy November, however: the English team, Italy, the Irish squad, and the French team are their fixtures, with a game against Japan in the capital also planned for October 25th.
Wales, on the other hand, are teetering in 12th, with the Japanese side below, and the implications of dropping to thirteenth and into pot three are potentially severe.
Americas Presence and Future Tournaments
Another new dimension for the next World Cup is the participation of five teams from the Americas: Argentina, Uruguay, USA, Canada, and the Chilean squad – with Paraguay or Brazil possibly becoming the sixth. From the governing body's perspective, engagement from the Americas is positive, particularly with the 2031 tournament scheduled to be hosted by the USA, and the host selection for the 2035 edition was initiated last month.
Current Priority
For now, though. The return match of Brazil v Paraguay sets up a four-way qualifying contest, combined with a potential rankings shake-up throughout the European nations in November. Regardless of how things pan out, Chile's successful qualification for a second consecutive World Cup has already made them as a clear success story.
