Each time a prominent honors show approaches, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.
Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
