UN Ends Restrictions on Syria's Leader Prior to Presidential Visit
Security Council representatives gave the green light to a US resolution to lift sanctions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his White House visit the coming week.
He became interim leader after leading a rebel offensive that ousted the previous leader in winter 2024, concluding over a decade of civil war.
America's diplomat Mike Waltz at the United Nations stated the United Nations delivered "an emphatic political statement" that recognised Syria was in "a fresh chapter" since Assad was deposed.
Sharaa was under UN sanctions in his role as head of the religious organization the HTS movement, previously associated with the extremist organization. The US removed HTS from a list of global extremist entities in July.
More Penalties Removed
The UN also removed sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister the interior minister.
The Syrian diplomatic chief welcomed the removal of the sanctions, posting on social media: "Syria expresses its appreciation toward America and to friendly nations for their support the country and its population."
Upcoming White House Meeting
President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday follows President Trump remarked that Sharaa had made "good progress" working toward stability to the previously divided state.
The pair met initially this past May, during Trump's Riyadh trip on a tour of the region.
Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed Sharaa as a "tough guy" having a "formative history".
The HTS organization he led operated as the terrorist network's partner inside the country before he cut connections during 2016.
Previous US Visit
This week's diplomatic engagement does not represent Sharaa's first trip to America during this period. In September, he made history as the first Syrian leader to speak before the UN General Assembly in Manhattan for nearly six decades.
Throughout his presentation, he declared the nation was "restoring its proper position across international circles" and expressed solidarity toward Gaza's residents.
