United Kingdom Extends Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Alert Roster with An additional 11 Destinations
British government has included eleven more nations to its travel warning roster regarding the threats of methanol poisoning from contaminated spirits.
This revised travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol toxicity.
Just last month, officials had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, following multiple notable events including the tragic demise of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being warned that even small amounts of toxic alcohol can result in permanent eye damage or death within 12 to 48 hrs.
Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Utilized?
Toxic alcohol is a harmful chemical typically utilized in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. It is not designed for human consumption.
While it is naturally produced during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the distillation process.
Yet in some countries, it is illegally mixed into beverages to cut costs, and as it is flavorless and smell-free, it is very difficult to identify.
